01.01.2006. Artists' Main New Year Resolutions, 2006

New Year’s resolutions 2006

by Audrey Dujardin

Have you ever wondered what kind of New Year's resolutions come from metal musicians? Now is your chance to find out. Audrey Dujardin has asked Mark "Barney"’ Greenway (Napalm Death), Sven de Caluwé (Aborted, Leng Tch'e), Nicolas Malfeyt (Leng Tch'e), Tapio Wilska (ex-Finntroll, Sethian), Henri Sorvali (Moonsorrow, Finntroll), Janne Wirman (Children Of Bodom), Pete Lindroos (Ensiferum, Norther), Erkki Silvennoinen (Amoral) and Markus Toivonen (Ensiferum) about it and below is what they had to say.

Mark "Barney" Greenway (Napalm Death)

  1. Looking back on 2005, what are you proud of?
  2. ‘The Code Is Red…Long Live the Code’ album was great for us – new record company, a lot more support from them and a lot of chances to play in more countries even for Napalm Death! I know it’s really predictable to say ‘the new album blah blah’, but it really worked out for us.

Very proud of being able to sing alongside Jello Biafra. Also going to play in Indonesia and seeing how the world really is. And raise money in our own small way for the tsunami victims and for the victims of the floods in Louisiana

  3. Looking back on 2005, what would you change?
  4. There are many things I’d change in this world, but it’s ongoing and not dependent on the actual year. I’d certainly like to take a lot of the negative shit out of the general scene we move in.

In my own small world, probably not a lot actually.

  5. What are your resolutions for 2006?
  6. I don’t make resolutions because on a personal level I’m very conscious of my own actions all year round. I don’t over-indulge in anything these days. Outside of that, I just always vow to try and do more to help people; get involved in a bit of social justice, that sort of thing.

Sven de Caluwé (Aborted, Leng Tch'e)

  1. Looking back on 2005, what are you proud of?
  2. Touring the US & releasing both the archaic abattoir & the process of elimination, and getting the best leng tch’e line up together we could have ever gotten.

  3. Looking back on 2005, what would you change?
  4. The way some things went on the US tour & some relations got fucked up, for the rest there aren’t any regrets.

  5. What are your resolutions for 2006?
  6. Solve the current crisis & keeping on making some brutal ass kicking metal for the masses! We’ll be recording the new leng tch’e record ‘marasmus’ which should however only get released in January 2007 hehe, as well as the next aborted record, and lots of touring!

Nicolas Malfeyt (Leng Tch'e)

  1. Looking back on 2005, what are you proud of?
  2. Getting signed to Relapse Records and releasing our third album “The Process of Elimination”, and people actually liking it.

  3. Looking back on 2005, what would you change?
  4. Boris’ underwear.

  5. What are your resolutions for 2006?
  6. Recording our split CD and next full length and playing even more shows. Going back to the US, Canada, Scandinavia, Kazakhstan, who knows! Razorgrind is coming.

Tapio Wilska (ex-Finntroll, Sethian)

  1. Looking back on 2005, what are you proud of?
  2. I am proud of the steps we took forward as a band and the amount of touring we got to do (and not dying while doing it). I am proud of some personal evolving I got to do, and being able to rid myself of some personal demons.

  3. Looking back on 2005, what would you change?
  4. I would go back to the Dong Open Air in Germany and hide the booze from me and my bandmates. I would try to be more patient and less easy to get pissed off on tour. I would party more and worry less.

  5. What are your resolutions for 2006?
  6. I promise to try and party more. I will try to read more. I will try to not let being busy to stand in the way of staying in contact with people. I will try to stress less.

Henri Sorvali (Moonsorrow, Finntroll)

  1. Looking back on 2005, what are you proud of?
  2. The birth of my firstborn son. Besides that, I achieved many things in my personal life which I am really proud of, too.

  3. Looking back on 2005, what would you change?
  4. Nothing. The year was the most happy of my entire life.

  5. What are your resolutions for 2006?
  6. Starting gym (seriously) again in late january. Composing better music, more music and concentrating on the sound design- studies as well. Finishing the last 30% of my still untattooed skin in the left arm in the summer. More fishing, more outdoors and less cigarettes.

Janne Wirman (Children Of Bodom)

  1. Looking back on 2005, what are you proud of?
  2. Proud of in 2005? I dunno…. Well… I got engaged! Well she was asking for it for 5 years already so maybe it was about time!

  3. Looking back on 2005, what would you change?
  4. Yeah… I mean we do stupid things when we are drunk on the tour all the time … I would have to write you a list! But now I can’t come up with anything.

  5. What are your resolutions for 2006?
  6. I have one, but you can’t say that in public!

Pete Lindroos (Ensiferum, Norther)

  1. Looking back on 2005, what are you proud of?
  2. Well there are 3 highlights so far. The first one was we recorded a new album with Norther, second we recorded the ‘Dragonheads EP’ with Ensiferum, and then the gig in Wacken. That was fucking cool! Those are the 3 highlights of 2005.

  3. Looking back on 2005, what would you change?
  4. All the hangover days to be sober!

  5. What are your resolutions for 2006?
  6. I didn’t make any. I know that I cannot keep them. I could be not drinking for the first month or something like that, but I didn’t make any because I can’t keep anything. So it’s better to be not promising.

Erkki Silvennoinen (Amoral)

  1. Looking back on 2005, what are you proud of?
  2. I finally learned how to play bass. Somewhat.

  3. Looking back on 2005, what would you change?
  4. I guess nothing, it’s been a great year.

  5. What are your resolutions for 2006?
  6. None at this point.

Markus Toivonen (Ensiferum)

  1. Looking back on 2005, what are you proud of?
  2. Maybe the Wacken show. Or the tour. Because it was our first headlining tour.

  3. Looking back on 2005, what would you change?
  4. The 2 shows that we cancelled in Spain. And also the cancelling of the Xmass fest tour. We didn’t like that at all. But what can you do, shit happens.

  5. What are your resolutions for 2006?
  6. Nothing. We don’t make promises.
